They can come from some type of trauma or from biting down on a hard object. If the teeth were not healthy to start, they are more likely to break. Some breaks are more severe than others. A minor crack or fracture may not cause problems right away, but if left untreated could get worse. There are other types of breaks that are a little worse, but still are not considered an emergency. A severe break occurs when the break goes deep enough to expose the nerve. This can cause a lot of pain and can expose your teeth and gums to some serious problems. The Problems of a Severe BreakExposing the nerve makes the severe breaks very painful. While some may ignore the pain, most people need to do something to stop the pain. The best way for us to do that is through a root canal procedure to remove the nerve and to repair the place where the tooth broke.
