Myopia Control
Myopia or “nearsightedness” is when the eye grows too long so that light does not focus on the retina, but instead focuses in front of the retina. This results in distant objects appearing blurry. Higher levels of myopia carries a significantly increased risk of eye diseases such as retinal detachments, cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

The exact cause of myopia is currently unknown, however, several factors seem to play a role. Some of these factors are environmental, such as a limited exposure to outdoor sunlight or an increased amount of reading or near work. There also appears to be a genetic component because children of parents with myopia are more likely to develop myopia.

Myopia is becoming increasingly common worldwide, it is predicted that 50% of the world’s population will have myopia by the year 2050.

Myopia Control options at Mountain View Optometry:

CRT (Corneal Refractive Therapy)/Orthokeratology is an FDA approved non-surgical method that can reduce and even eliminate myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. This method uses a specially designed gas permeable contact lens that is only worn while sleeping. The lens gently reshapes the front surface of the eye, when the lens is removed in the morning, glasses and contacts are typically not needed during the day.

How to stay healthy with Paragon CRT

Multifocal Soft Contact Lenses
Multifocal contact lenses have multiple powers within the same lens. When placed on the eye, the central part of the contact lens corrects the refractive error to improve distance vision and the peripheral concentric rings are used to focus light in front of the retina (the back of the eye). Having multiple powers within the same lens reduces the stimulus causing the myopia progression. These lenses are prescribed to be worn during the day and removed while sleeping.

Atropine Eye Drops
Low concentration atropine eye drops are administered in both eyes just before bedtime. This low concentration of atropine slows the progression of myopia. Glasses or contacts will continue to be worn during the day during this treatment method.
