Mercer Island, WA

Goichi Shiotsu, DDS providing oral sedation to a patient who may suffer anxiety going to their Mercer Island dentist.Taking care of your mouth is important for maintaining optimal oral health and a beautiful smile. If an oral health issue does arise, getting treatment right away is important. Prompt treatment helps to stop the progression of the issue and restore the health of your mouth, preventing more serious issues from developing later on. However, if the thought of undergoing dental treatment fills you with dread, you might avoid going. At Goichi Shiotsu, DDS, we can help to make you feel more at ease and comfortable with sedation.

Why Use Sedation?

Sedation is frequently used for patients who experience anxiety or fear when it comes to undergoing dental treatment. Sedation helps you to feel more relaxed and comfortable, allowing us to administer care safely and effectively.

We can also provide sedation for other reasons aside from anxiety and fear. Common reasons for sedation include
•  You have a low pain threshold.
•  Your teeth are extremely sensitive.
•  Your gag reflex is easily triggered.
•  You find it difficult to sit still.
•  You require a lot of dental work or your treatment will take a long time to complete.

What is Oral Conscious Sedation?

We provide oral conscious sedation to help you feel relaxed and at ease. Oral conscious sedation is a form of moderate sedation that involves taking medication by mouth. In some cases, the medication may be administered sublingually, or under the tongue. The medication is administered in the comfort of our office before your treatment, and it can take about 30 minutes to take effect.

Oral conscious sedation is a form of moderate sedation. With this type of sedation, you are still conscious, but you are made to feel sleepy. Many patients report a temporary amnesic effect, where they are unable to recall parts, or even any, of their procedure. Once your treatment has been completed, it can take several hours for the effects of the sedation to wear off. Because of this, you should have a responsible driver attend your appointment with you so that this person can bring you home. When you arrive home, take it easy while the effects of your sedation wear off. As you begin to feel more like yourself, you resume your normal activities.

Benefits of Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation provides several benefits.
•  This form of sedation is very safe. Additionally, you are also monitored closely throughout the duration of your procedure.
•  Your medication is administered orally or sublingually. There is no need to insert a needle into your hand or arm.
•  With sedation, you are made to feel completely relaxed and comfortable. This helps you to feel at ease while we provide you with your necessary treatments.

Are There Any Drawbacks to Oral Conscious Sedation?

While a very safe and effective form of sedation, there are a few drawbacks that should also be aware of.
•  While it takes around 30 minutes for the sedation to take effect, the exact time varies from patient to patient.
•  As the medication wears off, you may feel groggy or out of sorts.
•  The effects can linger several hours. You will need to have another person with you who can drive you home.
•  You may experience temporary amnesia. Some patients may see this as a benefit, rather than a drawback.

With sedation, we can help you to feel calmer and more comfortable during your dental treatments, allowing us to provide you with care in a safe, effective manner. For more information, and to find out if sedation is right for you, call Goichi Shiotsu, DDS at (206) 232-3600 today.
