How Long is the Recovery Process for Implants?

The dental implant procedure has worked its way into mainstream popularity owing to its high success rate, longevity, and ability to restore normal oral functionality. However, the recovery process for dental implants can be off-putting to many individuals. In general, most patients may recover from dental implantation in as little as three months; however, others may require over eight months to make a full recovery.

There are several factors that influence recovery times, including the patient’s health and certain lifestyle factors such as smoking and drinking alcohol.

Type of Dental Implant Procedure

The recovery period also depends on the type of dental implant procedure. For example, patients who have undergone bone grafting surgery may require an additional six months of recovery. Others who did not require bone grafting may experience minor discomfort and swelling, and will recover in just under three months.

The number of dental implants also influences recovery times. If you have had several dental implants, as opposed to just one or two, you may have to wait longer for the surgical site to fully heal. The size of the implant also matters. For example, some implants may require at least three months to properly integrate with the jawbone.

The Post-Op Diet

It is important to follow the diet plan that your dentist gave you to improve the recovery process. During the first 48 hours, you should eat cool and soft foods. This means avoiding hot foods and beverages and consuming only cool liquids. Avoid drinking from a straw (or anything that requires suction) because it places undue pressure on the implant.

Instead, you should eat cold nutrition-dense foods that don’t require any chewing. Smoothies are highly nutritious and loaded with vitamins for restoring energy. Depending on your specific case, it may take about one week to return to normal eating habits after the surgery. Make sure to consult your dentist before making any changes to the diet.

Sleep is touted, and rightly so, as the secret ingredient for recovery from surgeries. Make sure to sleep at least eight hours per night after getting your dental implant surgery. Good quality sleep can alleviate stress and help you recharge. If you find it difficult to get sleep, talk to our friendly dentists, Dr. Luisa Snyder and Dr. Luisa Snyder, for advice.

Dental Implant FAQ

Let’s take a look at a few questions patients have about the dental implant recovery process.

How Much Water Should I Drink After Surgery?

It is recommended to stay hydrated after surgery to ensure that the surgical site receives plenty of oxygen and nutrition.

Recovery Periods: Dental Implants vs Dentures

The time it takes to recover from dentures depends on a number of factors. However, most dentures require at least three to six weeks to close and heal. By contrast, dental implants may require three to six months to heal.

Why is it Taking Me Longer to Recover from Dental Implants?

This could be due to a number of factors, including your overall health, propensity for smoking, and your commitment to post-op instructions. In any case, you should visit your dentist right away to rule out any causes that could be disrupting the healing process.
