Preventive dentistry includes tips, tools, and education to help you have healthier teeth longer. Increasingly, we are seeing children reach adulthood without ever experiencing a cavity; this is due to increased guidance and information. We value seeing all of our patients, children through adults, regularly and often.
Prevention, along with diagnostics, often includes home oral hygiene care, dental examinations, and evaluations, routine prophylaxis cleanings including the prevention of gingivitis and periodontal disease, digital x-rays and occasional fluoride treatments to strengthen the enamel.
Oral hygiene, including daily home care and semi-annual dental cleanings, is the most important step you can take in preventive care.
Studies by the American Dental Association reported that nearly 30% of people are not brushing as often as they should, and most people are not brushing for the recommended two minutes. Additionally, studies indicate that 60% of people are not flossing daily, with 20% never flossing. The simple task of brushing twice a day for two minutes each time, and flossing before you retire to bed can make a significant impact on your oral health.
At Fairmount Dental Center we recommend our patients consider the following tips:
• |
Brush Twice a Day:This is the basic step that is taught to everyone from early childhood. Your mouth is full of germs, germs from eating, breathing and engaging with others. We need to reduce or eliminate the bad germs through brushing regularly. Brushing removes plaque, food debris, and sugar. Brush regularly and often.
|
• |
Brush for Two Mins Each Time:Consider your mouth into four quadrants, half of upper, and half of the bottom. Brush each quadrant for 30 seconds, considering all sides of each tooth and being sure to angle the brush toward the gumline to remove any plaque.
|
• |
Floss:
Floss comes in a variety of forms, traditional thread, flavored thread, floss sticks, and water piks. Find the right tool that works for you. It is important to remove food debris and plaque from between your teeth. If bacteria is left in place, it will cause decay and irritation.
|
• |
Rinse:A mouthwash or rinse is a simple way to reduce bad bacteria from your mouth. Rinse, gargle and spit. Quickly, you can have a healthier mouth. |
Dental Prevention through a Healthy Diet
Many diets today include a considerable amount of sugar. Even if you think you are cautious in the foods you eat, sugar is found in so many things. From white breads to pasta, and many of the drinks we drink, sugar is abundant. Sugar is the main cause of decay in our teeth. Start seeking foods that have less sugar; your teeth will thank you for it.
